Iowa State University was established on 22 March 1858 as Iowa Agricultural College and model farm. Story County was selected as a site for this purpose 21 June 1859 and original 648 acre farm was purchased at a cost of $5,379. Abraham Lincoln signed the law that led to the formation of land grant universities. Iowa State University was one of the first of these special colleges founded on three unique concepts: open higher education for all, teach practical lessons and share knowledge far beyond the campus borders.

The farm was the first building at the Iowa State campus. It was completed in 1861 and 1862, the Iowa legislature voted to accept the arrangement of the Morrill Act, which was awarded to the agricultural college in 1864. Iowa Agricultural College was renamed later as Iowa State College of agriculture and mechanic in 1898 arts.

The College began as a mixed school since the beginning and the first official class entered Ames in 1869. First-class 24 men and 2 women graduated in 1872. The first binary computer (ABC) was invented here and built here.
